We are back from our trip to Europe which included our UTracks walk in Western Sicily and thought I'd send you some feedback as you mentioned below.
The overall walk was fantastic and certainly in May we weren't overwhelmed by tourists. Not too hot and lots of wildflowers made May a good month to walk in Sicily.
The local providers were excellent and fixed up one minor issue quickly and kept in touch after that to find out how things were going.
The walking maps and instructions were also excellent - only got lost once for about 500m in the whole week which was my fault. Best walk was on the stunning Egadi Islands but all were worthwhile.
All the prearranged transfers were really efficient. Having a couple of train rides was fun too. One driver took us to his local bar and shouted us a coffee and cake as he felt he'd mixed up a pick up time. This was typical of the whole experience which was very welcoming.
The 2 B&B used for accommodation in Mazara and Trapani, I think for the first time, were basic but clean and well positioned near the train stations and middle of the old towns with helpful owners. The hotel in Scopello was the pick of the accommodation.
Some of the walks in particular the last day in the Zingaro National Park were actually pretty hard but spectacular with long up and down sections and we learnt the times in the book are really a minimum and don't include stopping time eg for lunch.
In retrospect a rest day to see Trapani properly would have been good but maybe makes the trip too long overall. Trapani we thought was the best place we saw in 6 weeks of travelling around the Mediterranean - very beautiful old town with friendly relaxed inhabitants and great food. A real undiscovered gem.
The day we were to catch the cablecar up to Erice the hill town above Trapani it was shut due to wind. We found a local bus that got us up there but it wasn't that easy to find so might be worth adding to the information that a bus is available.
Overall we thought it was a fantastic way to see a less travelled part of Sicily so thanks to UTracks for putting it together.
